Skandagiri Trek
Skandagiri trek is also known as Kalavara Durga because it is situated near the Kalavara Halli community. The Papagni Mutt, one of Karnataka’s oldest and most historic mutts, is located near the slopes of Skandagiri.
The trail ascends from Papagni Mutt to the top, where there are the remains of an old fort from the 18th century. The fort, which once belonged to a local ruler, was taken over by Tipu Sultan, who later used it as a stronghold in his battles with the British. However, after Tipu Sultan’s defeat in 1791, the fort was finally handed over.
It is breathtaking to see the four nearby “Giris,” or hills, from the top, which provides a panoramic perspective.
Located less than 60 miles from Bengaluru and only 3 km from Chikballapur, Skandagiri is easily accessible by road and train. Since it can be safely finished in 5 hours (2 hours for ascent and 2 hours for descent, with an hour’s rest at the summit), it is a great year-round trek for both novice and experienced trekkers.
